Trouble #5 You Are Being Watched: Movement Defense Against State & Corporate Surveillance

Santa Cruz TroubleMakers presents Trouble #5 You Are Being Watched: Movement Defense Against State & Corporate Surveillance. Join us for a screening and facilitated discussion on Sunday, August 6, 5:00 PM, at SubRosa, 703 Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz.

Ours is an age of historically unprecedented state and corporate surveillance. Our growing addiction to social media, smart phones and other forms of digital communication has ushered in a more interconnected society, but one that is almost entirely dependent on the technological infrastructure of massive telecommunication, software and IT corporations. The rise of surveillance capitalism has also granted state intelligence networks like the NSA with an unfathomably intimate snapshot into our personal lives. These days, everything we do or say online is collected and stored in massive server farms, accessible to intelligence analysts and state security forces at any time of their choosing. These enhanced surveillance capacities have, in turn, revolutionized more traditional methods of gathering intelligence on political dissidents, by helping local and federal police departments map out the networks they hope to infiltrate, and identify prospective targets that are most vulnerable to being flipped and/or coerced into betraying their supposed comrades.

Yet even with all these tools at their disposal, states around the world are finding it harder and harder to control the explosion of popular anger provoked by their increasingly severe policies of ecological destruction and capitalist exploitation.

In this month’s episode of Trouble, anarchist media collective sub.Media interviews a number of individuals about their experiences of dealing with undercovers and informants, and looks at some of the ways that we can build movements that are more resilient to state and corporate surveillance.

Trouble #4 No Justice… Just Us: Movement Defense Against State Repression

Santa Cruz TroubleMakers presents Trouble #4 No Justice… Just Us: Movement Defense Against State Repression. Join us for a screening and facilitated discussion on Sunday, July 16, 7:00 PM, at SubRosa, 703 Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz.

The struggle for a new, better world is not for the faint of heart. Movements of collective liberation, if they are effective, will inevitably face repression. The institutional pillars of domination and exploitation are well-entrenched in society, well-versed in manipulation, and utterly ruthless in their efforts to crush any and all threats to their legitimacy. At this critical juncture in history, our movements are confronted by incredibly powerful enemies, who use a variety of sophisticated methods to discredit, disrupt and deter resistance. Far-right populist movements, goaded on by corporate fear-mongering and neo-fascist propaganda, are increasingly resorting to violent vigilante attacks against their perceived enemies. And as if this wasn’t enough… standing firmly behind these new reactionary movements lies the naked power of the state – namely its heavily-militarized police, racist legal system and vast network of prisons. Yet despite this terrifying political atmosphere, our movements continue to grow.

Our future success and growth demands that we develop the capacity to anticipate the strategies and tactics that the state will use against us, build our own infrastructure to defend against these attacks, and incorporate meaningful solidarity and collective defense into all facets of our organizing. In this month’s episode of Trouble, anarchist media collective subMedia interviews a number of individuals engaged in legal defense and prisoner solidarity, and looks at some of the ways we can begin to build movements that are more resilient in the face of state repression.

Trouble #3 Refugees Welcome: Creating Solidarity Across Borders

Santa Cruz TroubleMakers presents Trouble #3 Refugees Welcome: Creating Solidarity Across Borders. Join us for a screening and facilitated discussion on Sunday, June 4, 7:00 PM, at SubRosa, 703 Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz.

In our current age of resurgent nationalism, anti-migrant xenophobia and increasing border militarization, it can be easy to lose track of the central role that migration has played in shaping the spaces we inhabit. The richness and depth of human history comes from the countless individual and collective journeys that we, or our ancestors before us, have taken to get to where we are now — wherever that might be. The so-called “refugee crisis” that has dominated headlines for the past several years is not a new phenomenon, nor is it a passing phase.

As our world stands on the precipice of more destabilizing wars waged over declining resources, a deepening of structural economic inequality and the onset of cataclysmic climate change, even more dramatic movements of human populations are inevitable. What is not yet inevitable is how humanity will respond to this crisis. In this month’s episode of Trouble, anarchist media collective subMedia interviews a number of individuals from around the world who are helping to chart a course for the future based on living practices of solidarity and mutual aid, and who are invested in tearing down the physical and imaginary borders that seek to keep us divided.

Trouble #2 Bash the Fash: Confronting the Rise of the New Right

Santa Cruz TroubleMakers presents Trouble #2 Bash the Fash: Confronting the Rise of the New Right. Join us for a screening and facilitated discussion on Sunday, May 21, 6:00 PM, at SubRosa, 703 Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz.

Reactionary right-wing politics are on the rise in the west, and events are moving at a dangerous pace. In the wake of Trump’s ascendency to the US presidency, a toxic mix of white nationalism, Islamophobia, transphobia, violent misogyny, and anti-migrant hysteria is rapidly coalescing into a growing movement that has in turn sparked a surge of interest in anti-fascist organizing. Battle lines are being drawn, and street clashes are escalating.

In episode #2 of Trouble, anarchist media collective subMedia interviews a number of individuals from the US, Canada and the UK in order to get a better understanding of just what it is that we’re up against, what a viable strategy for confronting this threat might look like, what steps we can take in order to mount an effective response, and how this all fits into our efforts to build a revolutionary movement against capitalism and the state.
